Kalamazoo Emergency Associates, P.L.C. ("KEA") is a professional corporation of emergency
physicians that was organized in 1980 in order to provide emergency physician
services at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo, Michigan. It has provided
continuous service at that institution since 1980.
Growing from its original staff of five physicians to an organization of over thirty physicians, KEA now provides emergency physician professional services at one additional hospital.
KEA currently staffs the emergency departments of the following hospitals in southwestern Michigan (dates of inception of services in parentheses):
Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, Michigan (1980)
KEA's goal is to be an innovative and active participant in the development and provision of emergency and ambulatory care medical services while providing a professional environment for its physicians that promotes physician retention and professional development.
KEA was instrumental in the development, medical direction, and staffing of Borgess Inflight Medical Service in 1987, and remained an integral part of that entity until Inflight merged into Western Michigan Air Care in 1993.
KEA's expansion into the coverage of regional hospital emergency departments in 1985 created an opportunity to provide services in institutions with widely varying emergency department patient volumes and resources.
This expansion also provided the opportunity for KEA physicians to participate in a variety of clinical and administrative activities within the KEA organization.
KEA has been involved in the development and subsequent operation of an accredited emergency medicine residency program in Kalamazoo. The residency program has achieved an important position in graduate medical education in Kalamazoo and provides many opportunities for KEA physicians to be involved in academic emergency medicine. The residency has also provided a source of well trained emergency physicians for southwestern Michigan.
KEA physicians have been active participants in EMS activities with leadership roles in local and regional medical control authorities as well as providing on line EMS medical direction and education.
KEA recruits actively from a variety of resources, provides centralized physician scheduling in cooperation with its hospital Emergency Department Medical Director, provides physician backup capability for vacations and illnesses, provides an organizational quality assurance program, and coordinates a variety of physician employee benefits for each of its physicians.
Over ninety-six percent of KEA physicians are Board Certified or Qualified in Emergency Medicine or other primary care specialties.
The stability of its physician relationships is in part reflected in the current average years of service with KEA of its full time emergency physicians. That average exceeds twelve years.
KEA formally adopted a Mission Statement in May of 1993. This statement was written to reflect the philosophy under which the group has operated since its formation in 1980. A copy of that document can be found here.
